EHV

EHV (Equine Herpesvirus) is a contagious virus that affects horses. The most common types, EHV-1 and EHV-4, spread easily when horses touch noses, breathe in droplets from another horse, or come into contact with dirty equipment like brushes, buckets, or even people’s hands and clothes. The virus can hide in a horse’s body and come back when the horse is stressed. It can cause breathing problems, fevers, coughing, nasal discharge, and overall tiredness. EHV-1 can also cause pregnant mares to lose their foals or lead to serious nerve problems.

To protect your horse, wash supplies often, avoid traveling when there’s a risk of EHV, and never share tools or brushes with other horses. Always wash your hands between handling different horses.
